  • About two months ago I received an email from TotallyRad! Inc, a company known for awesome Photoshop actions and Lightroom presets.  They asked me to review their new film presets for Adobe Lightroom – presets that allow photographers quickly and easily edit images so that the final product looks as if it were shot on different types of film.
I am a huge film photography aficionado – I shot film professionally for many years and even when I switched to digital for all of my commercial work I still shoot a ton of film for personal projects.  When VSCO came out with Adobe Lightroom presets about two years ago, I was completely blown away.  They did an amazing job of replicating all the wonderful tonal properties of different films and crossing the bridge between digital and analog images.

When TotallyRad! asked me to review their new presets, I was very hesitant – while I generally embrace change, I’ve been in love with VSCO film presets for so long, I did not want to try another product.  A few weeks ago I finally got enough free time to sit down and play with Replichrome presets for a few hours.  Let me tell you, they are pretty damn great.

While VSCO offers separate sets of Lightroom presets specifically calibrated for Nikon and Canon cameras, Replichrome presets are split based on commercial film scanners – Noritsu and Frontier.

I edited a single image using most presets by both VSCO and Replichrome.  All Replichrome edits were done using Noritsu presets (since I prefer tonal qualities of that particular scanner).  Each pair of images has a Replichrome edit at the top and a VSCO edit on the bottom. Even though both companies offer presets for simulating under- and over-exposure, I edited this image using standard exposure setting.  The image was straight out of the camera and edited ONLY using the presets.

Huge thanks to Rhaina Taylor for second-shooting for me on such a short notice and for doing such an amazing job!  This was my first time shooting at Bill Chisnel Productions – what an awesome location and Bill is the nicest guy in the world!

  • My maternal grandfather passed away in 1998; he spent 11 years of his life in Soviet labor camps and I spent the past 15 years researching his life and trying to find out what happened with his family.  In doing that, I completely neglected the other side of my family.

A few days ago I sat down with Daniella (my older daughter) to show her the contents of my keepsake box.  As I opened the box, I came across a ziplock bag full of Soviet-era medals.  I completely forgot that I even had these medals in my possession – my paternal grandmother gave them to me before moving to a nursing home in 2011.  My paternal grandfather – David – passed away when I was 5 years old, and I have very few memories of him.  Seeing these medals and explaining  what they are and what they mean to Daniella made me feel terribly guilty about knowing virtually nothing about my grandfather David’s life.

Given my grandmother’s mental state I have a very short window of opportunity to find out as much as I can about my grandfather.  I guess I know what I’m doing over Thanksgiving holidays.

  • A few weeks ago I had the privilege to photograph Jen’s and Will’s wedding.  Both Will and Jen are naturals with the camera – it was almost impossible to take a bad photo (or a photo without Jen laughing).
As always, Jenny Karlsson was an amazing second shooter – she took all the photos of the groomsmen getting ready.  She also saved the day during the ceremony – I had a little mishap climbing down from the wall at the Aviary and it took me almost 10 minutes to get back to the garden.

Jen and Will – thank you guys for being such easy-going, awesome clients!

  • A few photos from today’s trip to Soergel Orchards in Wexford.  They brought in an antique fire truck and the kids had a blast climbing all over it for about two hours.  I used this trip as an opportunity to shoot a few rolls of film.  The ones in this post were shot on Fuji Reala 100.
