Across Generations is an ongoing photography project about the ways knowledge is shared across generations in Ecuador, particularly in Kichwa and Waorani communities.
The project began in 2023, on my first trip to the Amazon to establish a study abroad program and a collaborative research project with the Iyarina Field School in Puerto Napo. Since then, I’ve been back five times, sometimes by myself, sometimes with groups of students. Every time I visit, it is a new learning experience and a new set of connections. I don’t speak Kichwa or Waorani, and my Spanish is atrocious, and yet I’ve always managed to find ways to communicate with the people I met.
The photographs focus on everyday moments of teaching, storytelling, and remembering – how language, traditions, knowledge of the land, and family histories are passed from one person to another.
